Enfield Schools Capital Improvement Programme
Strengthening electrical infrastructure to support safe and reliable learning environments.
Electrical upgrades in London from Aston Group.
Context
As part of the London Borough of Enfield's ongoing investment in its education estate, Aston Group was appointed to deliver a programme of electrical infrastructure improvements at Enfield County Upper School.
The project formed part of the wider Capital Improvement Programme, ensuring that critical building services remain safe, compliant and capable of supporting the school's operational needs for years to come. Delivered during the summer holiday period, the works required careful planning and coordination to maximise productivity within a limited programme window.
Brief
The London Borough of Enfield commissioned Aston Group to undertake a comprehensive upgrade of the school's electrical infrastructure, addressing ageing systems and improving the overall safety, resilience and reliability of the electrical network.
The project involved the replacement of distribution equipment, completion of statutory testing and remedial works, and the implementation of measures designed to enhance electrical protection and long-term performance across the site.
All works were required to be completed during the six-week summer holiday period to ensure the school was fully operational for the start of the new academic year.
Challenge
Enfield County Upper School is a large and complex educational facility comprising three separate teaching blocks and an extensive electrical distribution network.
The project required Aston Group to assess and upgrade a total of 72 distribution boards across the site within a tightly constrained six-week programme. Maintaining programme certainty was critical, with all works needing to be completed, tested and certified before pupils and staff returned in September.
Alongside the physical upgrades, the project demanded comprehensive Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs), remediation of identified compliance issues and full NICEIC certification, all delivered within the limited summer shutdown period.
Careful programme management, resource planning and coordination were essential to ensure successful delivery while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Solution
Aston Group delivered a complete electrical infrastructure upgrade programme designed to improve network resilience, enhance electrical safety and ensure statutory compliance across the school estate.
The works included:
- Full Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) across the school.
- Replacement of existing distribution boards and associated electrical equipment.
- Installation of new distribution boards complete with Surge Protection Devices (SPDs).
- Completion of all identified C1 and C2 remedial works.
- Fire stopping and associated compliance works.
- NICEIC testing, certification and commissioning.
- Production of Operation and Maintenance (O&M) manuals.
- Client training and handover support.
Through detailed planning and efficient project delivery, Aston Group successfully completed the programme within the summer holiday period, ensuring the upgraded infrastructure was fully operational ahead of the new academic year.
Results
The electrical infrastructure upgrade was successfully delivered on programme, providing Enfield County Upper School with a modern, compliant and more resilient electrical network.
Key outcomes included:
- Successful delivery of an £85,000 electrical infrastructure upgrade.
- Comprehensive EICR assessment completed across the site.
- Replacement and modernisation of 72 distribution boards across three school buildings.
- Installation of a new surge-protected electrical distribution network.
- Improved electrical safety, reliability and operational resilience.
- Completion of all identified compliance and remedial works.
- Full NICEIC certification and compliant handover achieved.
- Enhanced long-term performance of the school's critical electrical infrastructure.
