World Earth Day 2023
As part of World Earth Day, Aston Group brought the Waltham Forest community together by organising a litter pick, a fun day and a tree planting ceremony to mark the occasion.
William Morris Close Litter Pick
On Saturday the 22nd April as part of the World Earth Day celebrations we kicked off with a community litter pick in collaboration with William Morris Big Local and the Walthamstow Tool Library Litter Picking Group.
We were joined by nine residents for a successful clean up around William Morris Close and Forest Road. We donated the three recycling bags used for the Tool Library after the litter pick. Everyone said how enjoyable the event was, and are looking forward to returning for more litter picks!
One of our staff members, John, who volunteered on the day said:
“I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Community Litter Pick in E17. I found it quite therapeutic to be outdoors on a sunny spring day, helping to clean up my neighbourhood. My “prize pick” was part of a gas pipe! I even found myself engaging in a lovely chat with a senior citizen as I cleared around the bus stop he was sitting at! I have now joined their WhatsApp group to stay in touch and take part in future litter picks.
Fun Day at Priory Court
After the litter pick at William Morris Close we held a mini fun day at Priory Court Community Centre, offering environmental games, puzzles and arts and crafts. We invited the Tool Library to come along, promote their services and offer a seed swap, as well as Climate Action organisation HUBREN who brought along their climate bike and badge making kit, which residents enjoyed using.
Finally, in honour of the day, we held a Tree Planting ceremony at William Morris Close with local residents, to plant an apple tree next to the Christmas Tree we provided at Christmas. Hopefully by next year the apple tree will be able to provide fruit for residents to pick.
